Anadach Consulting Group, in collaboration with the Kenyan Government and Tele-Health Society of Kenya has the pleasure to invite you to participate in the e-Health Africa Conference which will be held in Nairobi, Kenya on the 18th and 19th of April 2012. The e-Health Africa Conference 2012: Integrating m-health into e-Health Strategy Implementation is one of the first multi-stakeholder event focusing on e-Health in Africa that will take place on the continent. The conference will identify best practices and lessons-learned from those who are in the process of developing, or have already developed national e-Health strategies. In addition, the conference places a special emphasis on m-health given that Africa has the fastest growing mobile market with over 50% of people using mobile phones. McKinsey estimated that opportunities in the global mobile healthcare market were worth between $50 and $60 billion in 2010 and growing. There are currently 5 billion wireless subscribers and 70% of them are in low and middle income countries. With such powerful technology already in the hands of millions, entrepreneurs in Africa will be able to capitalize on their versatility, building new businesses on existing and evolving technology. Specifically, mobile technology can be used to leverage health care delivery through:
• Membership authentication of Health Insurance programs for subscribers
• Access to emergency health care services by subscribers
• Providing specialist diagnosis and treatment through phone or video images or through combining mobile phones with other health technology
• Allowing individuals to communicate with health service providers through call centers, help lines, toll-free emergency services
• Using mobile phones to support communication between health service providers and clients through appointment and treatment reminders, community mobilization campaigns, and awareness raising about health issues
• Using mobile technology for health monitoring and data collection
• Providing access to health information for health care professionals at the point of care through decision support systems
For the telecommunications industry, a rapidly growing e-Health sector could represent a significant market opportunity, accelerated by the enhanced availability of java-enabled phones and mobile services in several countries.
For health and ICT entrepreneurs, a new platform creates an opportunity to develop innovative ideas that address existing problems or create new solutions to improve healthcare. Most African countries are not on track to meet the UN’s Millennium Development Goals so the need for innovation has never been greater.
Our host country, Kenya is one of the first African country to develop and begin to implement an e-Health strategy with a vision that focuses on developing efficient, accessible, equitable, secure, and consumer friendly healthcare services enabled by ICT.
This conference would provide an opportunity to focus on implementation of this new e-Health strategy by encouraging knowledge exchange, fostering new relationships and networking opportunities, not only among Kenya eHealth stakeholders but also with stakeholders from other parts of Africa and other regions.

The Promise of e-Health in Africa
In many African countries, a myriad of health challenges continue to demonstrate a lack of sustained progress towards achieving the Millennium Goals related to health. For example:
• African women still face more than 100 times the risk of maternal mortality than women in the developed world.
• One in six children born in the region today will die before the age of five.
• More than half of the population in sub-Saharan Africa still have limited access to modern health facilities.
• There is human resource crisis in health care with significant shortages of nurses and physicians.
Some African countries are hoping to leverage innovative and efficient eHealth and mHealth solutions that can enable them to deliver higher quality health care services to their citizens. They are interested in learning more about how to pilot and scale up effective eHealth and mHealth tools for providers, program managers and clients. e-Health could support improved care for individuals, by enabling providers to make informed decisions based on guidance, evidence and patient-specific data. e-Health can also promote more transparency and accountability in health services, promoting evidence-based practice and error reduction, diagnostic accuracy and treatment. It can also facilitate patient empowerment, enabling better self-care and health decision making. Finally, ehealth can increase cost-efficiency by streamlining processes, reducing waiting times and improving accuracy of data.
Our Objectives
The Conference will focus on the current use and application of e-Health solutions to address healthcare challenges and the innovative opportunities that lie ahead in Africa. The program will include presentations using the latest innovative and multi-media techniques to engage participants on e-Health initiatives (including m-health) in Africa and other emerging markets, as well as a training program focusing on the practical use of m-health tools for data collection on the continent.The conference would promote knowledge exchange between countries that have developed national e-Health strategies (such as Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania), and with others who are in the process of or thinking about developing such strategies. It would also provide a platform to facilitate the implementation of Kenya's new eHealth strategy by bringing together key stakeholders from Kenya, elsewhere in Africa and around the world who are working in health care, telecommunications, ICT, finance, academia, and the development sectors to share knowledge, exchange ideas, discuss innovative and emerging solutions and develop collaborations.
